About the Course
The state-approved Ohio Teen Driver Education Online course teaches road rules and safe driving habits. It covers Ohio traffic laws, including speed limits and right-of-way rules, along with defensive driving techniques to help motorists handle emergencies and avoid common hazards. Students will also learn vehicle operation basics such as steering, braking and key vehicle functions.
The course also emphasizes risk management, teaching drivers how to navigate challenging situations like bad weather and heavy traffic. With engaging videos, quizzes and real-world scenarios, this program emphasizes lifelong safe driving habits while preparing students for both the written exam and for getting behind the wheel.
How It Works
Students can apply for their probationary license if they are at least 16 years old. Before enrolling, teens must already hold a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC), which can be obtained at age 15 1/2.
To qualify for a probationary license, the teen must hold this permit for at least six months. During this period, they must complete an ODPS-approved, 24-hour driver education course, like this one, before applying for a probationary license.
In addition to completing the online course, teens are required to complete eight hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving instructor and 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours at night. Once these steps are completed, teens can then schedule in-person Driving and Skills tests at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
After passing the course's final exam, students will receive a completion certificate by email within two business days. They must present this certificate to their behind-the-wheel provider and to the Ohio BMV before taking the Driving and Skills tests. We report completions to the Ohio Department of Public Safety within one business day.
